about

A song that started as an introspection on #independenceday that might be more about our shared experience than I had expected. I won’t bore y’all with it but this summer has been a weird one…so this is either a sea shanty I wrote after being haunted many nights in a row by a ghost from my childhood, or it’s a lament about being really, really tired of being bullied. Or it’s a retelling of #llorona legend in ballad form. Or a new legend about a woman who goes down to the ocean and discovers her own bones. Or maybe, America, it’s about us.

lyrics

Out along the water
Not that far from home
Ill met by moonlight
That’s where they say you’ll find her bones

It isn’t getting better
It isn’t getting better like they said
It isn’t getting better
(isn't getting better)

Never had to drag myself to shore before
Never had to drag myself to shore before

Here lies one who fell before
And there, another washed a shore
Farther out one more from years ago
They say just let your nature take its course
Cause I’ve paid every damn penance, I made my amends
Down to the dollar, down to the cent

But it isn’t getting better
It isn’t getting better like they said it would

Loretta came to me in a dream
She said I’m ready to take you
Daughter, daughter of mine
I think I’m ready
I’m finally ready to take you

So why don’t you drown
Why don’t you drown
I’ll always be there when you’re ready
To follow me down

(I don’t know you anymore)

Maybe I’ll wake from the dream
But maybe she’ll finally take me
Maybe I’ll float out to sea
With nobody to wake me
Maybe what’s left of my spirit was already found
Down at the water’s edge, just as the legend said
Broken and and bled from the impact

Of trying not to drown
Trying not to drown
Trying not to drown

(I’ll always be there when you’re ready)
